The mention of Italian cuisine commonly has a person dreaming of pizza and carbonara. After all, the culture is known for its savory, carb-loaded dishes. However, there are several sweet and delicious treats the Italian peninsula has to offer. Let’s explore six of our favorites.
Panna Cotta
Translated to “cooked cream” in Italian, panna cotta is essentially thick cream, sugar, and gelatin. The mixture is formed into a mold, chilled, and then infused with spices or sauce. Panna cotta has a similar consistency to flan and is enjoyed with an espresso or grappa.
Tiramisu
The sweet combination of coffee, sweet mascarpone, and chocolate gives tiramisu its unique flavor. You can find this Italian dessert on many menus throughout the world, in many variations.
Tartufo
A version of gelato, Tartufo is a frozen treat which originated in Pizzo. Commonly made with two flavors of gelato, Tartufo is coated with chocolate, nuts, and other delicious toppings.
Biscotti
Outside of the United States biscotti is known as cantucci. The twice-cooked biscuits are a cappuccino’s best friend. Often filled with pistachios, hazelnuts, or chocolate chips, the biscotti is a sweet treat for breakfast or a midday snack.
Torta Mimosa
The torta mimosa is not your average brunch beverage. The sponge cake is made of layers of custard, whipped cream, and yellow sponge cake. The mimosa flower is the symbol of the International Women’s Day and the torta mimosa is sold throughout Italy.
Seada
Commonly found in Sardinia, the seada is a large pastry made from flour and stuffed with cheese and lemon zest. It’s deep fried and then drizzled with honey for a sweet and savory affect.
