Summer in Maryland is hot and humid, but luckily there is Chardonnay to keep us cool. If you’re new to white wine, it’s important to discover your palette and learn what pairs best with your favorite dish. We’ve compiled a list of popular white wines to enjoy all summer long. Cheers!
Chardonnay
Starting off our list of wines is the ever-popular Chardonnay, which flavors include green apple, citrus, pineapple, and papaya. Produced in California and Australia, this wine pairs perfectly with every dinner dish. The wine can be made in several ways including crisp, stony, toasty and buttery or with the aforementioned flavors. Next time you visit, let your first pick be the most popular.
Pinot Gris/Grigio
When going to an Italian restaurant or having a night out on the town, Pinot Grigio is the second famous variety from our list. The flavors from a glass of Pinot Grigio include citrus, fresh pear, and melon. This wine is preferred because of how well it is paired with food. Most think Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are two different wines, but they are the same grape, just named differently. Pinot Gris can be found in Oregon where it is produced while California and Washington prefer Pinot Grigio. If you’re ever planning to go overseas, you can find the grape and its wine made in Alsace, Germany.
Chenin Blanc
Never heard of Chenin Blanc before? It may not be as common as the rest, but the flavors of this white wine are suggested on every person’s palette. Flavors of this wine include ripe apple, lemon drop, pear and honeydew. Chenin Blanc is most preferred where it is grown, in the Loire Valley of France. This white grape is paired with sweet dessert wines. What’s amazing about this wine is its aroma. You can smell everything floral, apple and pear straight out of the bottle. Adding this to your collection is preferred!
Gewürztraminer
Although very hard to pronounce, Gewürztraminer is a delicious variety of white wine. The flavors from this particular wine include lychee, grapefruit, flowers, and talc. This grape can be found in Alsace, Germany, but if you can’t go overseas, Oregon is your next destination.
Pinot Blanc
For this last white wine, flavors to keep in mind are green apple and citrus. Yes, it may seem a little sour, but the wine tastes everything but that. Pinot Blanc mimics Chardonnay but has a fresher and more elegant taste to it. The best tasting Pinot Blanc is when it is left in stainless steel. Others in parts of California and Italy prefer this taste.
